WeChat Pay Malaysia: e-Wallet, Buy Tickets, Top-up and More!

WeChat Pay is finally ready to be unveiled to all Malaysians. What’s most significant is the fact that with this rollout, Malaysia is the first foreign country in the world outside of China to have WeChat Pay enabled in a local currency. This would potentially allow for a widespread and seamless adoption of the service, allowing Malaysians to use WeChat Pay in Ringgit Malaysia.
Wechat is quite different with other chatting apps. Instead of using it by sending high quality pictures, there are many types of features that Wechat provides. Read on if you want to know more!

While other social media platforms might be part of your digital marketing strategy, WeChat is an application to consider as well, especially if you want to increase brand awareness and engage with your Chinese-speaking customers.
If WeChat started as a messaging apps, it is now much more than that!
Here is a list of (some of) the things you can do with WeChat:
  • Message your friends
  • Share on your timeline (like you would on Facebook)
  • Transfer money
  • Top-up your phone
  • Order a cab
  • Buy movie tickets
  • Order your dry cleaner
  • Order food
  • Invest money in a wealth management plan
  • Book a train or plane ticket

Quick Pay and Cashless

Same as other e-wallets, wechat also can make a transaction quickly and easily using QR Code.  Simply show the generated QR code to the merchant to scan and enter the payment pin to complete the transaction. All you have to do is link your debit card to your WeChat Pay MY account. Once that’s done, you can top up your e-wallet balance and start purchasing things with WeChat Pay MY at both online and offline outlets. And what's cooler is that an offline payment feature has been launched recently, with KK Super Mart being the first chain store in Malaysia to accept WeChat Pay MY.

Send and Receive Money With ‘Money Packet’

Instead of that, with Wechat Pay, you can send and receive money with ‘Money Packet’ with your contacts. Money Packet is an in-app feature that allow you to conveniently make payments between individuals or groups.  You can also send the money with expressing a wishes in the message box! Interesting right?

Topup Your Phone

You can just make a top up using Wechat Pay in the apps. This includes telcos like Altel, Celcom, Digi, Friendi, Maxis, Merchantrade, Tune Talk, U Mobile and XOX.

Money Withdrawal From Your Wallet

Unlike the controversy of our very own Touch 'n Go, it is a pleasant surprise to find out that we can withdraw WeChat Pay balance here without much fuss, ironically even before its official launch! you can withdraw your WeChat balance as low as RM1 to 29 banks at the time of writing. The limit to withdraw is RM10,000 per month.

How can you leverage this integrated nature of WeChat in order to promote your business and brand in China?

WeChat enables companies and individuals to create “WeChat Official Accounts” in order to promote their company or brand. These accounts are to some extent similar to Facebook Pages: anybody can follow them and will then receive push notifications from them.
To a large extent, WeChat marketing is the art of gaining followers to your account, getting them actively engaged with it and eventually converting them to customers through the bottom-menu that they can use to purchase items or reach out to you.
